The appendix is a small pouch-like organ located at beginning of the large intestine. An appendectomy is the surgical removal of the vermiform appendix. This procedure is normally performed as an emergency procedure, when the patient is suffering from acute appendicitis. In the absence of surgical facilities, intravenous antibiotics are used to delay or avoid the onset of sepsis.
An appendectomy may be performed laproscopically or as an open operation. Removal of the appendix is called an appendectomy. Using a laproscope makes the procedure a laproscopic appendectomy. During a laproscopic appendectomy multiple small incisions are needed to insert the scope and other instruments. The open surgeryrequires a single, larger incision to reach the appendix. The laproscopic method is the most popular, but is not a good idea if you have scars from earlier operations, late pregnancy, or very severe inflammation. In this case, the open method is done.
